Using the COLT™ Selection Process

The selection process involves collecting information about your application and code allowance. To help with this process, you can use the original Saint Ferrer® COLT™ Selection Process Table as a guide for selection:

C—Code allowance or standard suitability
O—Operating conditions
L—Location and type of flange
T— Tightness Class Factor(tcf)

COLT™ Selection Process Tables

As described in the COLT™ Selection Process Tables, the satisfactory (S) use of Saint Ferrer® Flange Gasket and Bolting was determined using governing limitations established in ASME B16.5 and ASME B31.1. The performance of components, expressed as “tcf”, is stated in (parentheses).

“tcf” is a dimensionless value where the higher the value the tighter the joint. A minimum tcf value of 1 is required for Tightness Class 2. (for a full explanation of tcf and Tightness Class, please see the Sensible Saint Ferrer® Flange Gasket and Bolting & flange Isolation Products Guide. To achieve the desired results, proper installation using controlled methods is required.

If the tcf value is indicated with a dash, (-), then the joint tightness calculation in the specific T-P operating condition was less than 1. In these cases, a more meaningful examination of the bolted flanged joint is required.

Support for the COLT™ Selection Process Tables  and values can be substantiated through diligent engineering in the art and science of the bolted flanged joint.
